National- Six nuclear warheads were mistakenly flown from North Dakota to Louisiana last Thursday. The warheads were scheduled to be delivered to Barksdale Air Force Base from Minot Air Force Base. This incident was in direct violation of treaty signed during the Cold War stating that nuclear weapons were not to be flown no matter the circumstance. The Air Force is currently investigating the matter. According to officials, the squad leader has been relieved of duty and others have been decertified as well. Officials also say that if the warheads were to have fallen off of the aircraft, or the aircraft were to have crashed, no immediate danger would have been present. The warheads were not armed.in response to this incident, The United States Air Force has decreed that all flights of bombers and fighters will be halted on September 14th.
Opinion- It is really hard to believe that no one other then the two air force bases knew of this incident. If someone was transporting any type of nuclear weapon, it should be well-documented and viewed quite carefully. Hopefully this was just a really really big mix-up that will be closely investigated. It is fitting that the commanding leader was relieved of his duty.
International- George Bush met with Pacific Rim leaders on the topic of Global Warming on Wednesday. He urged leaders from 19 Asia-Pacific countries that in order to stop Global Warming, everyone must play their part. Bush was present in order to support Australia and their proposal that Asian-Pacific countries be more open to the initiatives against climate change. APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) has had many conferences and meetings on the issue of Global Warming many times. Emissions in many of the countries in APEC have been considerably high according to reports. However the issue of developed and underdeveloped countries, wealthy and poor countries has been debated in this conference and other conferences, such as the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Nearly 300 protesters gathered outside the conference against Bush and the Iraq War.
Opinion- Global Warming to me is just a way to stir up controversy. I do believe that the world does emit too many greenhouse gases, but not to the point where the ice caps in Antarctica are going to melt. Al Gore is at the forefront of this masquerade and is milking it for everything it is worth. I simply can't believe that smog is causing the temperature to rise when nearly 50 years ago, Congress meet to discuss the issue of Global Cooling. I think this whole global warming issue will continue to grow into something more than just greenhouse gases and other harmful hazards. Political goals will be reached through this and it will not be over in simply a couple years.
