KRISTA GROTE

National: Wal-Mart: Melamine in dog treats

Summary ~ Little Rock, Arkansas tests two brands of dog treats sold in the local Wal-Mart; they both tested positive for having melamine. There was also another incident in March with a massive pet food recall because it contained melamine. Many consumers complained that these two bands of dog treats from Shanghai Bistro Trading and Import-Pingyang Pet Products Co. have been making their dogs sick. One lady even claimed that her dog died after eating the treats. Although the product is making some dogs sick and even killing them, the companies still have not decided to recall their products. Instead consumers are just supposed to return the treats to their local Wal-Mart to get a refund.

Opinion ~ It does not seem fair that all the products that are being imported from china are harming pets, children, and any one else that uses these Chinese products. With all the recalls of dog food, toys, toothpaste, seafood, juice, and tires it makes me not want to trust any of the products that come from China if I’m going to have to worry about whether or not I’m going to be alive after I use or eat one of their product. Even though it is much cheaper to have things made and manufactured in China, it is not worth the risk even if you can save money if your life is endangered. Product inspections need to be enforced a lot better in China if they still want America or any other country to buy their products.

International: Sepat spawns deadly China tornado

Summary ~ this past weekend there was a major tropical storm on the southern coast of china. It killed 14 people and forced over a million people to evacuate their homes. There were also 60 that were injured because of a tornado that came off of Typhoon Sepat. The storm is destroying hundred of homes and cutting off power from the south to the east of the country. The storm has only caused $42 million dollars worth of damage. In southern China more than 900,000 people had to been relocated from their homes to find higher grounds.

Opinion ~ To me I do not think the disaster officials reacted as well as they could have in this situation. If they knew there was a typhoon coming they should have tried harder to make precautions and evacuate people from the potentially dangerous areas ahead of time rather than waiting till after the storm has come because now they are flooded in and their homes are ruined so the death toll is more likely to go up now. I think the disaster officials should be more prepared with a plan before the disaster hit next time.

Make sure you check capitalization of countries. Grammer and spell check in Word might help.

Scary trusting China with their products any more.

Good Job.
