National- Popcorn lung!
Wayne Watson of Centennial, Colorado loves microwave popcorn. He used to eat at least two bags a night, and would breathe in the savory butter smell unknowing it could be making him sick. It has been proven to cause bronchiolitis obliterans (popcorn lung) in factory workers, but Watson is the first case in a non-factory worker. Many workers have sued the factories over the past years because they knowingly use a product called diacetyl, which causes damage to the lungs. The Food and Drug Administration has approved diacetyl as a flavor ingredient.
Opinion- it is just ridiculous that anyone would eat that much popcorn! I have heard of some one liking, or even loving food, but that could be classified as an addiction. At least he’s taken his doctors advice and lowered his popcorn intake, and started snacking on vegetables and fruits.
International- Hurricane Felix
The death toll from the category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Felix neared 100 Thursday night as U.S., Honduran and Nicaraguan soldiers searched the jungles, beaches and the open sea for survivors and the dead. The villagers have been a big help as they join the rescuers in their canoes. Felix has damaged or destroyed 8,000 houses in Puerto Cabezas.
Opinion- This is terrible. I’m sure there are relief funds and stuff going to help the 18,000 Nicaraguans living in shelters. The government says they need at least $13 million to rebuild.
National- Apple cuts price on iPhone
Apple dropped the price of the iPhone by $200 and got a whole inbox of angry letters from people who paid the top dollar price of $600. Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs apologized and offered $100 credits to those who paid the $600. This credit is only good for Apple retail. Investors were also shaken up by the news, Apple's shares were sent down a total of more than 6% over the past two days, a drop that has wiped out about $8 billion in shareholder wealth. Apple's stock closed Thursday at $135.01.
Opinion- it is ridiculous that anyone would pay $600 for any phone. The price cut should have been expected by anyone who knows anything about technology. It was nice of Apple to give them back $100. It’s not like Apple took that big of a loss though because the $100 is only a credit for apple merchandise.
