Eight Die in School Shooting in Finland
(INTERNATIONAL) Summary: An 18 year old high school student in Finland posted a blog as to how he was going to kill people at his school entitled “Jokela High School Massacre”. The next day the boy deleted the video from YouTube and then went to school. At school the next day the boy brought a .22 caliber hand gun and began shooting fellow classmates, the principle and then himself. The boy managed to survive and 10 people walked away with minor injuries, but 8 did not. Finland has no restrictions on concealed weapons or guns at all, but surprisingly this is their first school shooting. The prime minister descried the situation as “extremely tragic” and said that the government would hold an emergency meeting.

Opinion: I find it kind of ironic how places like Finland or Europe can have laws that put no restrictions on gun control and yet this is only their first school shooting. I do not know if that is a god or bad thing but not knowing this was their first school shooting it would not sound so smart. But I guess their philosophy is that if we just let them do what they want with guns they won’t feel restricted and feel they need to kill people. Stupid! But apparently it worked until now. You give kids the opportunity they are immature and naive and stupid and are going to do things like shoot up a school and kill young innocent people.

Liverpool 8 - Besiktas 0
(INTERNATIONAL) Summary: In Liverpool on Tuesday night, Liverpool FC took on Besiktas CF from Turkey. Two weeks prior, the championship side from Turkey defeated Liverpool 1-0 in Turkey. Liverpool, the most successful English club in Champions League history, now had a point to prove Tuesday, needing a win and at least 4 points from their last two games to qualify for the knockout round, presently sitting at the bottom of their group with 1 point. The atmosphere was tense as the game began but as more and more time passed Liverpool began to dominate possession and have the most promising chances. In the first half Liverpool scored two goals courtesy of Peter Crouch ’19 and Yossi Benayoun ’32. The second half could not have been any better as rampant Liverpool beat Besiktas to keep their champions league hopes alive for two more weeks: goals by Benayoun ’53, ’56, Steven Gerrard ’69, Ryan Babel ’79, ’81 and Crouch ’89. This showing by Liverpool is currently the record for most goals scored and biggest win margin in Champions League history group stage to date.

Opinion: WOW! So all I can really say is I expected them to win, at home and all, but not by such a huge margin. Liverpool has been so inconsistent lately and after losing away to some cheesy team like Besiktas I wasn’t too sure how they would show at home. But they proved me wrong once again and they freaking played amazing. The second half was so one sided and so stylish and exciting by Liverpool it was sad to watch Besiktas because every time they tried to attack they got shut down. It only seems normal that the most famous English team in the Champions League and most successful would now hold the record for biggest win and most goals scored in a CL Group Stage.

Children’s Book Have Sex Line Number
(NATIONAL) Summary: The Magic Attic series books are geared towards young girls ages nine to twelve. In the back of these cute little books is an 800 number which now serves as a sex line. The line number was discovered by a mother who then checked every book in her library branch. The books come with play dolls and were sold to entertainer Marie Osmond years ago but then went out of print. Apparently the phone company resold the number. The Hillsborough libraries have nearly 100 books in the series. Some have the number and some have a disconnected number.

Opinion: All I can say is that this is totally retarded. Obviously it is true but who honestly calls the number in the back of a child’s book and I think it’s just accidental and bad on the phone company’s part. They should not have resold the number without first checking what happened to it in the first place. Hopefully no child called the sex line, but I think it just an honest mistake and a bit funny because it’s a number in the back of a book. I don’t even call the numbers from the infomercials on tv let alone the ones in the back of books.

Injecting Stem Cells Sparks Progress in Repairing Heart
(NATIONAL) Summary: In Orlando researchers have reported some success in using stem cells to patch ailing hearts. If the finals tests were to be conclusive than it would be a major breakthrough. Stem cells are the building blocks of a variety of tissues and embryonic stem cells can grow into any tissue. Researchers showed it’s possible to inject heart attack patients with muscle stem cells can boost their heart pumping power. All the studies are only preliminary and although most are positive they are modest. Doctors are trying to figure out how to plant cells in the heart so they will take over for the tissue that no longer functions. “It won’t be easy. The heart is complex with a built-in electrical system.”

Opinion: I think if researchers can figure out how to make the stem cells heal hearts it would be a big discovery for heart patients and the medical field in general, because it will then open the door to heal a lot of other things too. It sounds like a really good plan and I really hope that it works because I can only imagine how many lives it would save and save transplanting hearts for more serious patients. Using stem cells and things like this always scare me because I think of cloning and stuff but if this can really work I think it beneficial for our world and in saving lives.
