Six dead as gunman 'goes to war' with Missouri city
gunman killed five people and wounded two Thursday night at a police station and City Council meeting in suburban St. Louis before officers shot and killed him. Witnesses identified the gunman as Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton, a man who they said regularly disrupted meetings to make complaints, though he didn't make it clear what his concerns were.
Police have not identified the suspect. No one has made an official statement on Thornton's behalf, but his brother said Thornton "went to war tonight with the people that were of the government." Mayor Mike Swoboda was wounded and in critical condition, and Suburban Journals newspaper reporter Todd Smith was in satisfactory condition, St. John's Mercy Hospital spokesman Bill McShane told The Associated Press..

opinion

China rushes to restore electricity
Emergency crews rushed to restore electricity to parts of southern China damaged by unusually heavy snows, and forecasters said Friday that new storms could lash the area next week. In the midst of Lunar New Year festivities -- the nation's biggest holiday of the year -- Beijing sought to show that its emergency relief operations were bringing normalcy to central and southern provinces hard hit by a month of recurring snow and ice storms.
As of midday Thursday, work crews had reconnected nearly two-thirds of the 6,774 electrical lines cut during the storms and were repairing the remaining downed lines, according to a notice posted on the Web site of the State Council, China's Cabinet. The storms hit areas of China unaccustomed to cold, snowy weather, catching governments unprepared, and struck just as the country was gearing up for the holiday period, when tens of millions of Chinese travel.

opinion
it would be very difficult for people to live if there is no electricity. also there would be a lot of job to fix the electricity. china has the biggest population in the world which means that there would tons of places to fix. i hope they can fix and give people comfort.

Astronauts to check shuttle for damage
Shuttle Atlantis chased the international space station in orbit Friday as its crew prepared for a laser inspection of their ship's wings. After two months of technical delays, the shuttle was scheduled to reach the station Saturday with a special delivery: Europe's $2 billion Columbus lab.
But first the crew of seven astronauts had to determine whether the shuttle was damaged by at least three pieces of foam or other debris that came off the fuel tank two minutes after Thursday's liftoff.
There was no evidence that the debris hit Atlantis. But the astronauts planned to spend much of Friday using a laser-tipped inspection pole to examine the ship's vulnerable wings and nose.

opinion
it is dangerous for a shuttle to be damaged and it is dangerous for everyone. i hope the people are making a perfect shuttle as they spend their money. having a little bit of damage can destroy everything.

Police parade kidney-snatching 'mastermind'
The alleged mastermind of a kidney transplant scheme in India has admitted to his involvement in about 300 transplants over the last 12 to 13 years. Dr. Amit Kumar, smiling and with an apparent air of confidence, was paraded before reporters at the end of a news conference in which he declared his innocence.
"I have not duped anyone. I have not done anything wrong," Kumar said before authorities whisked him away. "You know that."
He was taken into custody Thursday evening in the Nepalese town of Saurah, about 95 miles (150 km) south of Kathmandu.

opinion
i dont think he is guilty. if he killed any one by having surgery, then it would be a crime, but if he did not killed anyone. the doctor did what he had to do and what people wanted to to. but in other way his actual job is illegal. taking out the humans part is not a propriate way.
